When you arrived at work today, would you say you were focused? Is it clear to you what you should be focused on? Are you focused on what matters most for the success of your business?
Here are a few tips for getting and staying focused:
- Make a list of the most important strategic issues that you should be focused on. Take no more than ten minutes.
- Pick the top three issues that you should attend to. Use a filter to select your top issues. Consider criteria such as increasing sales, controlling cost, new product development, adding to your service offering, improving cash flow, moving into new markets, etc.
- Keep a log of these issues. You can do this in a notebook, using Tasks in Outlook, use note cards, or have your assistant keep the log. Writing down your accomplishments is important to keep you mentally engaged and focused.
- Every day, the first thing before you touch anything else, do something that will move those three strategic issues forward in some fashion. Once you are in the habit of following this rule, the hard work will be done first thing in the morning, opening up the rest of the day to attend to other issues.
- Some days you will have significant movement, other days it will be less. What is important is consistent attention to the three matters you have selected as critical and strategic.
- When you see progress you will feel good about yourself and what you are doing. This activity will excite you and propel you.
- Once you have solved, completed, or implemented one of your strategic matters, pick the next one and start over.
